Review Summary:

Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice may be hype by many of the patrons and a hearty treat for many judging from the long queue in line. However, we simply cannot find the right chemistry to kindle the affinity love with it. May be we were there at the wrong time but until our next trip, we have to keep our stand as of now.

Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre is one of the more pleasant food centres for diners. The food centre is orderly, bright, well-ventilated and clean, plenty of space and definitely not sardine packed with tables and small aisle as compared to many others food centres, not to mention many of the good food stalls located there. Occasionally, you can even enjoy the street performance basking at the food centre enlivening the ambience.

Many trips had been made here and our latest mission is the famous Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice.

We ordered the duck rice with braised egg for $4.50.

Duck: the queue was long and the accolades displayed at the stall may have magnetized more attention from the public. Naturally we expect good duck rice here but…the first bite did not trigger too much of the excitement, the duck meat was not as refine as expected and the moist was not enough to tingle the taste buds. Seasoning of the duck was not distinctive and unable to highlight the bold taste from the accompanied gravy.

Gravy: unfortunately the gravy has not done the duck meat any flavour, present of herb flavour was not distinct and overall was unassuming in the taste, could do a bit more in depth.

Rice: many duck rice stalls have the tendency to neglect the importance of the rice, be it white rice or braised sauce rice or even yum rice. Sad to say that 90% of the rice we have tried from the many of the duck rice stalls failed to make the mark. The pitfalls of using low grade rice or under-cooked rice are kind of common phenomenon amongst the duck rice stalls here. Unfortunately, Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice never attained to make a difference.

Soup: the soup was bland with very mild herbal and braised duck flavour, sweetness? Tastiness? Flavoursome? Nope, it was neither here nor there, overall, the soup was not ingeniously created to impress.

Chili: the chili perhaps more appropriate to go with kway chap.
