Review Summary:

Overall, we can agree that Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy is a place for cheap and good zi char. While we were done with our dinner at 7.30pm, the whole of coffeeshop was already a full house eating the zi char, a best testimonial to show their popularity.

No roasted turkey, honey ham or champagne for our Christmas Eve dinner, instead we headed for a popular zi char stall at Chai Chee. Well, as long as everyone enjoys the dinner, does it really matter without the big bird and wine on the table to celebrate the festival?

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy – a typical coffeeshop zi char stall located in this fairly isolated coffeeshop at the void deck of a HDB, it is not even near to the neighborhood centre and location indeed a challenge to attract the attention. The coffeeshop is clean and neat with teakwood furniture for dining and waitresses were armed with Tablet and go around to take orders, this is definitely not common in our coffeeshop culture.

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy has been adopting value for money with its cheap and good dishes as their marketing strategy, it has been  pretty successful in this so far.

We started with all the three types of crabs.

Salted egg crab $28

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 10

For the price paid, we can’t expect they serve us Sri Lanka crabs, it is the normal mug crab and cooked with salted eggs and curry leaves. The concoction of the salted egg mixture was succulent and instantly gained the nobs from all of us. The crab was less ideal as we can’t really taste the sweetness of the crab meat and missing the juiciness perhaps from overcooking.

Korean Vermicelli Crab $25

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 11

When the dish was served, it looked closely resemble of the traditional Thai Claypot vermicelli and that was what we expected, however, not sure if this is the Korean way of seasoning, the vermicelli tasted a tad of sweet and nothing else, no garlic, no coriander flavour. This is the worst amongst all the three crab we ordered.

Famous Chili Crab $25

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 7

The gravy was tasted on the tomatoes-flavoured and more on sweet side, it was quite an ordinary Chili crab we thought, frankly, we were trying very hard to figure out what really good about this dish that the stall think its sumptuous chili crab warrant them to call it as their “famous” dish. Besides the salted egg crab that may worth a try, the Famous Chill Crab and Korean Vermicelli Crab have plenty of rooms for improvement.

Dry roasted Sotong $20

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 8

Nicely seasoned and grilled, sotong was not rubbery hard and done to the right texture, one of their specialties that warrant a try.

Fried Long beans with prawns $15

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 6

The tempura style long bean (we thought it was more a French bean but the menu stated as long bean) and prawn was a hit among us, fragrance and thin crispy coating will make you yell for more. A must try dish here.

Fried Bee Hoon with Pig Trotters $16

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 2

The bee hoon was fried with significant amount of canned pig trotter on top of heavy dosage of pork lard, the chef intention was clear to ensure each strain of bee hoon was soaked and coated with the fragrance of the lard. Sinful? Yes. Nice? Yes.

Prawn paste fried chicken wings $8

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 5

This was one of the better prawn paste fried chicken wings we have tried so far. The prawn paste coating was marvelous and hit at the right note, prawn paste was not overpowering and meat was able to retain the juiciness, something worth a try.

Kang Kong with cuttlefish $10

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 3

Non spicy sweet sauce doused over fresh and chewy cuttlefish with Kang Kong.

Chilli fried with Morning Glory $9

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 4

The Sambal chili went fantastically well with the perfectly fried Kang Kong, not too spicy and we can fully appreciate the fragrance of the sambal chili. One of the dishes disappeared from the plate in the shortest time. Must try!

Four Treasure Beancurd $10

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 9

Soft and egg-flavoured bean curd cooked with prawns, fish maws and vegetables, a savoury dish that was well-liked by all.
Salted Egg Prawn $26

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 17

This is one of their signature dishes and truly lives up to the name. Generous amount of salted egg yolks with coating sheathed the whole big prawn (real big prawn), a dish well loved by all.

Dragon Pork Ribs $16

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 13

Gigantic pork ribs that was bathed in the sweet and savoury sauce, tenderly meat and delicious.

Asam Fish Head $20

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 14

Half of the Fish Head cooked in asam with egg plants and lady fingers. Just an average dish.

Sweet Potatoes Leaf with Sambal $9

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 15

It was so good that we wanted to go for repeat order.

Fried Cereal Chicken $15

Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy 16

Butter flavour was fully blended with the cereal and coated the tender chicken. A savory dish worth the try.

Barley Drink $1.20

specially got to mention the Barley drink here, the barley was ground from the grains to maximize the extraction of the essence from the barley during boiling, you will be able to truly enjoy a well prepared drink that packed with barley aroma.

Overall, we can agree that Eastern House of Seafood Delicacy is a place for cheap and good zi char. While we were done with our dinner at 7.30pm, the whole of coffeeshop was already a full house eating the zi char, a best testimonial to show their popularity.
