seriously, this is rare opportunity to experience Japanese home cooked food in Singapore, the only time we had tasted real home cooked Japanese food was at Asakawa’s house – one of our close Japanese friends that we acquainted during his work assignment here. The home cooked Japanese food was so good even till now it is always one of the topics we never failed to talk about whenever the family visits Singapore.
We were elated when IPPIN Cafe Bar appears to be different from the rest of the Japanese restaurants by offering home cooked Japanese food.
IPPIN Cafe Bar is situated at Mohamed Sultan Road, an area that is populated with Japanese. Welcoming the patrons at the entrance is the neatly elected racking displaying array of imported Japanese goods, from rice, noodles, sake, tea to kitchen essentials; you can eat and shop at the same time.
Don’t expect a big crew of chef to cook and serve you the food, at IPPIN, the kitchen is managed by one lovely and humble lady – Naomi. Naomi not just the woman whipping out plates of succulent food, she is also the trainer conducting Japanese cooking class for the public in English. Interested in Japanese home cooked food? Look at Naomi’s photo, anything resemble a chef? To us she is more like the Mum-at-home.
Besides home cooked Japanese food, IPPIN serves an array of sake and Japanese beers as well.
Miso Udon Noodle with Oyster Set $15 NETT
Miso udon is soul food of Aichi Prefecture. Using red miso from natural production method by placing koji (soybeans) in a wooden barrel for two summers and two winters. Served with kobachi (small dish) and dessert. Simple and delicious.
Grilled Oyster & Veggies in Ponzu Butter Sauce Set $20 NETT
Oysters are from Hiroshima Prefecture the most famous area of oyster in Japan! These oysters are raised in clean ocean so be ready for a clean taste. Grilled in ponzu (yuzu vingar) butter sauce, it is even refreshing. Served with rice (with Barley), Hatcho miso soup, Nikujaka pork and potato stew, salad and dessert. It was tantalizing and fulfilling.
Deep Fried Oyster Set $24 NETT
Oysters are from the same Hiroshima Prefecture, Lightly battered to attain the desirable crispiness externally, Served with rice (with Barley), Hatcho miso soup, Nikujaka pork and potato stew, salad and dessert.
The oyster was fresh, battered coat and deep fried to a golden brown, oyster was retained the juiciness and tenderness. It was the big hit amongst many of us.
Oyakudon Set $15 NETT
Chicken and rice ! The secret of oishii is dashi (stock) – boil chicken with dashi and served with miso soup and dessert. The dish was simply unpretentious, meat was sumptuous and palatable.
Yakisoba Set $12 NETT
Yakisoba is Japanese daily food. The secret of oishii is savoury sauce. Come from Chiba Prefecture and served with Lobachi (small dish) and dessert. The noodles was cooked using the pre-packed off the shelf yakisoba but it was so alluring that we bought home few packages and cooked it right the next day.
Green Tea $6 NETT
Different green tea are available, from the most popular Sencha which has a refreshing aroma to the more mellow taste of Genmaicha and the kids friendly Hojicha.
Miss Ayumi Fujishiro – the owner of the café masterfully brewing the green tea. She was shaking the teapot vigorously trying to force the last drop of the green tea out of the pot, to her, every drop of green tea in the pot is precious.
Many types of Sake and craft beers imported from Japan are available. Choose 3 sake you would like to taste for $15 NETT. Craft beer at $9. I can only have a sip of the sake so not to get myself into trouble with drink driving – so need to praise myself a responsible driver. 🙂
