We are quite disheartened what had presented by Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat, the steamboat as well as the side dishes disappointing quality is a disservice to their customers. May be the day of visit was not right but we hope the restaurant can do something about it to improve the quality of the steamboat and dishes, it is after-all a century old brand and should well deserve better quality and recognition.

Perhaps one of the oldest fish head steamboat shop in Singapore, Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat was established in 1927, the long history and three generations of making the  traditional fish soup steam boat should have perfected the dish and our expectations were high.

Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat is located at the junction of Jalan Sultan and North Bridge Road, occupied a two story coffeeshop with non-aircon dining environment. Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat offers zichar dishes but people come here are mainly targeting their famous signature charcoal-fired Teochew fish head steamboat.

Choice of Pomfret / Song Fishhead / Grouper and Snapper were available, depend on the selection of the fish, the steamboat can range from cheapest of $20 Song fishhead (small) to $70 (largest) of pomfret or grouper.

Snapper Fish boat $28/35/50

We had visited many famous fishhead steamboat restaurants or stalls in the past one year and Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat was the last on our list before we conclude our best Fishhead steamboat choice. We ordered the red snapper and only fish head was available though we would prefer the fish meat.

The steamboat was filled with yam, seaweeds, Chinese cabbage and of course the snapper fish head, yes..fish head and we had quite a challenge to find some fish meat out of the pot of broth, gnawing the bony fish head was rightfully the authentic way of eating fish head steamboat and you just have to learn to enjoy, so, fish eyes for anyone?

We had high expectations from their long experience in making fish head steamboat, the broth was the soul of the good steamboat and unfortunately Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat failed to impress us. Where are the fundamental sweetness and tastiness of a good steamboat? Where is the slurp-worthy fishhead steamboat soup? Are we missing something here?

The side orders were not able to change our perception with its mediocre standard. We are not nitpicking or over critical but if comparing Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat with many other fish head steamboat restaurants or stalls we had tasted, there is a distinct gap to the next closest match.
