Review Summary:

The kueh’s skin was chewy, soft and pleasant to the bite, however, the skin was just too thick (about 3 mm) and a big disappointment to us, the fillings were too sweet but going to be a love for those with a sweet tooth. Though the freshness of the kueh was commendable but the deficiency in the fragrance of the filling was a big drawback.

Poh Cheu Handmade Soon Kway and Ang Ku Kueh has been the anchor shop in the Alexandra village for years, the Poh Cheu specialised in a variety of assortment handmade kueh, the most popular one are the Soon Kueh and the Ang Ku Kueh. You can find Hakka abacus and glutinous rice from the stall as well.

Poh Cheu steadfast on their tradition to hand make every kuek and not resorting to machine, coupled with the daily production to ensure the freshness of the kueh have stirred up the huge liking of many of the kueh’s fan.

Ang Ku Kueh

Poh cheu serves varieties of Ang Ku Kueh with different exotic flavours, from the common peanut, green bean, black sesame, yam to the more unique flavours of durian and mango. We have tried some Ang Ku Kueh with paper thin skin and fragrant filling that is definitely up to the mark to challenge Poh Cheu.

Soon Kueh

The other specialty is their Soon Kueh that comes with different exotic fillings – Turnip Soon Kueh, Ku Cai Kueh, Bamboo Kueh, Yam Kueh and Rice cake. The kueh’s skin was a crystal finishing and pact with the fillings. We tried the Turnip soon kueh and the Ku Cai Kueh, the skin was thin and with the right texture, however, both the fillings was lack of the punch and fragrance even we endorsed the freshness of the fillings.

Abacus and Glutinous rice

The abacus beads was quite tasty, you can enjoy the yam flavour in each of the bead, the mushroom as well as the dried shrimp topped with the dried shallot and shredded coriander further lift up the desirable taste of this Hakka delicacy, however, this is a comment from a non Hakka family and may be a review from a origin clan could be more truthful.

The glutinous rice was ordinary and no comment from us.

Overall, the belief in handmade tradition and the freshness of the kueh are the two factors to keep Poh Cheu busy and to maintain the sentiment with the royal fans. However, we think that is plenty of rooms to improve especially the “thick skin” Ang Ku Kueh and the fillings of the Ang Ku Kueh and the soon kueh.
