From Yilan, we moved on to Taichung for our second stop of food hunting in Taiwan. FengJia night market 逢甲夜市 is a must visit place for the local street food, there are many good restaurants and cafes around in Taichung but we have to be selective with the limited time we have on our itinerary.

Wu Wei Tsao Tang is a Traditional Chinese with Japanese influenced tea house. Iits ancient Chinese architecture framework built on mainly timberwork and surrounded a huge fish pool that provides a natural habitat for the Koi with the Aquatic plants and trees around.

Individual small hunt and private dining rooms spreading around the premises to cater for different patrons’ needs. There are tables with “tatami” sitting or the standard setting available.

Stepping into Wu Wei Tsao Tang will make your mood swing instantly, it was a feeling of travelling back to the early 1900’s ancient Chinese world. We are amazed with its beautiful structure work and the surreal and tranquil of the environment.

Food are equally great with the set menu we tried. The salmon was perfectly pan-fried to a nice crisp outside and a soft, juicy interior. Seasoning was on the spot and deserved a big thumb up for us.

We had indulged too much of Carnivorous food and opted the veggies hot pot. A big pot of veggies, cabbage, mushroom, pumpkin, toufu etc, served with pickles and sacha sauce, freshness of the veggies are guaranteed and another satisfying set menu that we are very pleased.

Do try the dessert as well, the taro balls and sweet potatoes balls (on the menu it shown as two separate items but do ask for the mix so you can try both). For the taro balls, the filling is mashed sweet potatoes and the opposite for the sweet potatoes balls with Yam filling. Both the balls are deep fried to a chewy texture, real good dessert to end the meal.

Wu Wei Tsao Tang is place leave us with a deep impression. A glad place highly recommended in your next trip to Taichung.

Miyahara (宮原眼科)

The building was once an ophthalmology clinic but transformed into a charming gorgeous Taiwan dessert house. The spectacular space and structure resembled the old England library.

Traditional Taiwan desserts are sold here like pineapple tarts, cakes, biscuits, chocolates, cookies and all types of local popular snacks. However, one of the main attractions of Miyahara is the ice cream, there are more than 50 flavours of house brand premium quality ice cream available here, many are specially created flavour that you will not be able to find in anywhere else. The queue for the ice cream is not for the impatience.

There are too many flavours and we have only limited available capacity to experience some of the flavours.

The ice cream was generally smooth and not too sweet, not extraordinary but overall acceptable.

One of the biggest night markets in Taiwan, open from 5pm to midnight daily and a must visit place to hunt for local snacks.

Small intestine wrapped in large intestine or Small sausage in large sausage, a Taiwan local invention by wrapping the usually char-grilled pork sausage with sticky glutinous rice. The wrap will then topped with various condiments like pickled ginger, cucumber together with the various choices of sauce like original, black pepper, spicy or wasabi to complement the taste.

The combination was quite nice but could be a bit heavy loaded with the glutinous rice, if not for sharing, our stomachs probably already reached the limit.

The dough is flatten like the roti prata and grilled on the hot plate, an egg and spring onions are added with you choice of sauce before roll it up. You can taste the fragrance of the egg in the dough and the sweetness of the spring onion. Not too bad in our opinion.

Japan mashed potatoes formed into 30cm world longest French fries. You can choose different sauce as topping, the fries was deep-fried till crisp exteriorly but retained the softness inside. You can enjoy the nice aroma of the potato in each bite and an interesting snack that worth the try.

大甲 is famous with their fragrance and creamy texture taro or yam. Desserts made of the popular yam are prevalent in Taichung.

大甲芋頭城, a shop specializes in taro desserts and is known for the best around FengJia. There are many choices but just go for the signature 芋圓綜合 – NT45, an assorted dessert bowl with yam, tapioca pearls, red beans and flavored chewy balls. Hot and cold version are available. Honestly, it is not over the moon feeling and fairly ordinary, but undeniably the yam is good.

Pig blood cake NT40 豬血

A street food served on a stick in Taiwan, voted number 1 most disgusting food in the world, mixture of pig blood with glutinous rice and sold as a rectangle 1cm thick cake. The cake is then dabbed with peanut powder and brushed with sweet sauce and chili sauce. Nice? we took a big courage to have a bite, it just taste bland even with all the accompaniment added, in the end, we can’t even finished half but have to give up.

You will find it in every night market and a snack prevalent in Taiwan. Fresh cuttlefish deep fried and doused with your choice of sauce. We went for the Thai chili sauce, the cuttlefish was fresh and chewy but will not make you craving for more.

Lazy people Prawns 小鬍子懒人虾

Popular snack at Fengjia night market, don’t expect big and juicy tiger prawns, the grilled shrimps are the size about your little finger and you eat it without de-shelling, that is how the name “Lazy people prawns” come about. However, the raved reviews about the prawns are not good enough to convince us to cast an affirmative vote for it.

On the recommended list of Michelin guide under Taiwan snack. The fillings are the traditional spring onion and diced pork with spices. The buns are stick to the sides of a cylindrical oven fired with charcoal, the charcoal grilled buns delivered a crisp and charred flavour of the skin, fillings are juicy and strong spices  predominated by the fragrant pepper.  Overall a quality bun but will not make your eyeballs rolling.

Local made bread and cakes are one of the things that you must eat when you’re visiting Taiwan, the bakery industry is much inherited and influenced by the Japanese with its superior flour and fine ingredients used. Bread and cakes here are usually fair much better than our Singapore bakery and highly recommended food you must try.

Taichung food review summary

Fengjia night market is a good place to explore Taiwan street food and should always be part of the itinerary when visiting Taichung. For local restaurant cuisine, head to 無為草堂 Wu Wei Tsao Tang which is truly an unique experience for us in this trip.
