Review Summary:

The Coastal Settlement won our hearts with the ambience and the food was rather decent if not above average. This a a great place to laze around for a weekend break with family or friends, however, weekend is usually packed with patrons and queue already formed way before the opening time of 10.30am on the Sunday morning. Do get here early for a table, early bird catches the worms.

Changi is home to many chalets, mainly because it is away from the city, and it is known for its serenity and tranquility. We went to The Coastal Settlement for this very same reason, to have brunch on a calm and slow paced Sunday morning. The one thing we like about this restaurant is that it prides itself as a casual dining restaurant, café and bar which provides us with a one of a kind village home-like environment. (yes, that means that you can walk in with your slippers and tees!)

We managed to catch a glimpse of the interior of the restaurant while we were waiting, and we were in awe of the furniture and décor in the restaurant. It was indeed one of a kind! A huge assortment of vintage pieces ranging from bikes to chairs to pottery pieces and even old typewriters were placed all over the area. There were even a couple of vintage cars lying around! For those that born before or in the 90s, stepping into The Coastal Settlement was like stepping into a time machine, you would momentarily forget that you’re in year 2014. Everything was so vintage; it could have very well been a museum.

We ordered the Truffle Fries, Calamari, Wagyu Beef and Mushroom Pizza, Char Kway Teow and Nasi Lemak.

Truffle Fries

Pretty sure this is the best truffle fries we have had to date. It was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, we could smell the truffle oil from a mile away! Generous portions of truffle oil must have been used to attain this taste. It was extremely addictive, a must order! Even though my brother had a sore throat, he still stuffed his mouth full with the fries like there’s no tomorrow. Quoted from my mum, it was very “kiam pang” or fragrant.

Calamari

The chewy calamari had a mildly spicy and non-crispy coating. The passion fruit dip that went along with the calamari was savoury and tangy at the same time, it was delightfully refreshing! This is what we call an appetiser.

Wagyu Beef and Mushroom Pizza

The pizza crust was slightly different to what you get outside; it was more similar to a naan or a pita wrap. While it did not give us the wow factor like the truffle fries did, it was rather unique. The beef used was also very tender, and the mushrooms were juicy and fresh!

Char Kway Teow

The seasoning was reasonable, but the Kway Teow itself was all clumped together,  and it lacked charred aroma or wok hei smell too.

Nasi Lemak

One of the most important parts of a Nasi Lemak has got to be the rice; the rice of The Coastal Settlement’s Nasi Lemak was fragrant and grainy. The anchovies were larger than what you would have normally and certainly of a better quality, the ikan Bilis was fried to attain a real crispy finishing. Chicken wing had a special flour coating that included spices and egg that was a bit too hard to our liking. The chilli was filled with he bi hiam or minced shrimps with chilli. It was not spicy but tasty and addictive! The chilli went well with the Nasi Lemak.
