Review Summary:

Overall, it was a satisfying bowl of Lor Mee. Though Xin Mei Xiang may have a slight edge when it comes to the quality of their toppings, we still prefer the savory gravy from Tiong Bahru Lor Mee, which is rich and flavorful from the fragrance of the spices.

Tiong Bahru Lor Mee

Oh, how we love Old Airport Road Food Centre, home of many wonderful food stalls. This was where we found ourselves last weekend for lunch again – it’s usually our go-to food spot as a family, as everyone’s able to easily find something to satisfy their cravings. (Though often, true to our renown as the Glutton Family, we find ourselves over-ordering…It can be too hard to resist sometimes!)

This particular food centre is also home to many ‘famous’ stalls. So far, we have already tried the famous kway chap, famous wanton mee, famous rojak and famous hokkien mee….and now, the famous Lor Mee!

There are two famous lor mee stalls here; the longer queue can usually be found at Xin Mei Xiang, which we have already reviewed, and the shorter one at Tiong Bahru Lor Mee. So how does Tiong Bahru Lor Mee compare?

We ordered the Lor Mee with extra toppings ($4) that came with fish flakes on top of the usual braised pork, boiled eggs, Ngoh Hiang and garlic, garnished with coriander and chopped red chili.

The gravy was gooey, thick and savory, as compared to Xin Mei Xiang’s which is on the sweeter side. Between the two; we prefer the savory version because it’s less cloying, especially with the vinegar and chopped garlic that give it that satisfying kick (and dragon breath!).

While the yellow flat noodle was a little overdone, luckily, the toppings made up for it with their tastiness. The braised pork belly was tender though fatty. Fish flakes were fragrant and sweet and it’s something we always request more of if possible, as this is a top favorite for our two teen kids. Before you know it, it’d have disappeared from the bowl!

Looks like we’ll be adding Tiong Bahru Lor Mee to our long list of favorites at Old Airport Road Food Centre!
