REVIEW: Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice 原味沙煲饭

The stretch of Jalan Tampang is populated with eateries and draws good crowd from the nearby residents. Located just a stone’s throw away from the famous Sembawang White Bee Hoon, Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice offers local zi char dishes and claypot rice in a non-air conditioned coffeeshop. There is seating available at the front and back of the shop.

Every zi char shop has its signature dishes and the chefs from Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice are proud of their da lu mian, san lou bee hoon, garlic fried chicken, curry fish head and of course their anchor dish – the claypot rice.

Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice — Da Lu Mian ($4.80)

Sembanwang Traditional Claypot Rice da lu mian

The claypot da lu mian is prepared in the Malaysian KL style with great emphasis on seafood to infuse the broth with the necessary sweetness and flavour. This is one of the better ones we have tried.

Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice — San Lou Bee Hoon ($4.80)

Fried with generous portions of pork, eggs and seafood. The bee hoon was then allowed to char and create the smoky flavour that accentuates the overall taste. A nice dish worth trying here.

Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice — Garlic Fried Chicken ($12.80)

The deep fried chicken was seasoned with turmeric powder and fried with huge portion of mashed garlic to create this unique dish. The meat was tender and fried to perfection, you can truly enjoy the fragrance from this great seasoned chicken.

Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice — Curry Fish Head

The spiciness in the piping hot claypot fish head challenges your tolerance level. Rich and flavourful curry with fresh fish head creates a good pairing with plain rice.

Traditional Claypot Rice

Sembanwang Traditional Claypot Rice sa po fan

Claypot rice is supposed to be the signature dish here and is cooked in the traditional way with chicken, salted fish, Chinese sausage and vegetables. However, the seasoning was too mellow to encapsulate the essence of a real good claypot rice. The chicken was tender but suffered from the same fate as the rice for the blandness. Overall, a little more work is required to perk up the overall flavour.

Our favorite veggie and what was delivered did not fail us.

Our verdict

Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice delivered the promise of quality and taste, we seriously loved most of the dishes served though the claypot rice was a misstep during our visit. Overall it is still a place worth visiting for some good comfort food.
