Tian Wai Tian Fishhead Steamboat
Looking at the crazily crowd at Tian Wai Tian Fishhead Steamboat, you know it has a huge fans after them, tables occupied every inch of the walkway and spread to the back alley under the Al Fresco dining.
At Tian Wai Tian Fishhead Steamboat, there isn’t anyone come to your table to take your order, you have to join the perpetual queue at the counter and the lady holding a big pile of dollar note will scribble your order on a piece of paper, she will do the mental sum on the spot and the bill is settled, interestingly, the cashier machine was just right to her but the primitive way seem to take the stage. Do you trust the summary? If not, do your sum then.
Nothing here go by the standard flow compared to other eateries, refill of broth for your steamboat? You got to walk all the way into the heart of the kitchen where the big pot of the broth is boiling over the charcoal that used for the steamboat as well, the helper then scooped the broth from the big pot with a big ladle, you have to carry the boiling hot broth gingerly, zigzagging and veering right and left through the crowd and back to your table, what a challenge! Can’t they just fill up a few jars and leave it at the counter for self service? Seriously, they don’t need to show us their kitchen and shouldn’t the kitchen out of bounds to the customers?
Red Snapper Steamboat ($22/$32/$42)
The steamboat was “uniquely common”, fried fish was used instead of fresh fish, luckily, the fried fish was fresh and meaty, it is one of the most generous serving amongst all the steamboat we had visited.
The broth in the steamboat was tasted somehow familiar…hmm..yes..it reminiscent the soup from some of the fish soup stall! Shouldn’t the broth be tasted like steamboat broth than fish soup? Though we have no qualms about the fish soup which was sweet and flavourful.
Har Chong Chicken Wing ($8/$10/$12/$15)
Prawn paste Chicken wing was nicely fried to retain the juiciness and tenderness, however, the prawn paste aroma was not too distinct and refine but comforting.
Tofu Prawn ($13/$20/$26)
A seemingly popular dish here with its present on most of the tables. Medium size fresh prawns cooked with Tofu in a luscious gravy, the taste is pronounced with it enticing flavour. Worth to try.
Fried Sambal Sweet Potatoes Leaf ($6/$8)
The veggies were nothing remarkable, sambal? Where is it?
Prawn Roll ($7/$10/$12/$15)
Vapid and inevitably some duds, floury packed and perhaps concocted with mashed taro and miserably prawn bits. We don’t recommend at all.
Fluffy and the eggy flavour were evident.
Tian Wai Tian Fishhead Steamboat Verdict :
Tian Wai Tian Fishhead Steamboat may not impressed us with its fish soup base steamboat instead of authentic Teochew steamboat broth, however, the use of fried fish than fresh fish may not be a bad ideas depends on ones preference, honestly we prefer the ravishingly beautifully fried fish that aerated the overall satisfaction. Side dishes have some hits and misses but generally acceptable to complement the main. One important note, it is one of the cheapest steamboat among all the popular steamboat places.
