Toa Payoh Rojak 大巴窑罗惹

Nope, Toa Payoh Rojak isn’t located in Toa Payoh, but is instead at the Old Kallang Airport Hawker Centre. These guys started their business in Toa Payoh and is now in the hand of their second generation, managed by the son-in-law of the founder, and has been in business for at least half a century. And they have certainly made a name for themselves in the process!

So what’s so special about Toa Payoh Rojak, that has helped it to differentiate itself from other famous Rojak like Whampoa Rojak and Brother Rojak? Well, Toa Payoh Rojak freshly makes every plate of Rojak from scratch: we especially like the tau pok and you tiao, which were charcoal grilled to attain a slight crisp, giving Toa Payoh Rojak the edge over popular Whampoa Rojak, in our opinion.

And there were also no complaints from us on the freshness of the fruits and vegetables used. Especially since every plate is made from scratch, the fruit & veg have no opportunity to lose their juices. The only drawback though, is that we found the Rojak paste too sweet, the sugar overwhelmed and masked the shrimp paste flavour, compromising what could have been a very enjoyable dish.

Our verdict: if not for the too-sweet Rojak paste, Toa Payoh Rojak does have the potential to be a contender for the best Chinese Rojak in Singapore. So, what constitutes the best Rojak? In our opinion, (and we often find ourselves wishing this of many stalls we visit), ideally we could have the best of the ingredients from Toa Payoh Rojak and the Rojak paste from Whampoa Rojak.
