Finding The Best Rice Dumpling Bak Chang in Singapore
Duan Wu festival or the Dragon boat festival is just around the corner and myriad of aroma from the rice dumpling or bak chang have already filled the air.
This pyramid shape of bamboo leaf wrapped with rice and the rich profusions of ingredients have been creating the yearly sentimental yearning for this tradition food.
Locally, there are not many bak chang players in the mass market, of course, we are not talking about those far-fetched and exorbitant rice dumplings filled with abalone or exotic stuff from the restaurants or hotels, but the bak chang you can buy from the food centres or shophouses around us.
Here is the list of Bak Chang that we have tried but only three are worth the recommendation.
Overall, the fragrance of the fillings, good seasoning and the nice rice texture combined makes the dumplings from Hiong Kee dumplings a notch above the average, this is clearly validated from the long queue outside of the stall which is the best mandate given to their quality.
Hoo Kee Bak Chang
Hoo Kee Bak Chang is not oil-logged with fatty meat, all the bak chang are mostly wrapped with slices of lean meat so not overly guilt concerning the fat beneath the bamboo leaves, we enjoyed the pork which was tender and savoury. The chestnut was equally good, it was soft, crumbly and sweet. In the nutshell, everything in the bak chang complement each other very well and help to enhance the overall taste and satisfaction.
Kim Choo Kueh Chang Pte Ltd
We find both the Nyonya and Hokkien Bak Change to be delectable, with mouth-watering filling and tasty glutinous rice. Though there were some imperfections with the Hokkien Bak Chang, we think that their renown as the best Bak Chang in Singapore is still well-deserved.
By the way, don’t confuse Kim Choo Kueh Chang the other shop named ‘Joo Chiat Kim Choo Traditional Rice Dumpling’. The standard between the two varies quite substantially, only go for Kim Choo Kueh Chang.
